If you’re thinking about changing your hair color before Diwali, start with the kind of change you actually want. A little warmth? Lighter pieces around your face? A color people will notice?

Here are three ideas to take to your colorist. They’re options to explore—not a claim that everyone in Chennai is asking for them

Cinnamon Brown

Cinnamon brown adds warmth to a brunette base without taking you far from your natural color. You could keep it subtle, or ask for a little more warmth through the lengths so it catches the light.

If you’re new to coloring your hair, this may feel like a comfortable first step. Bring a photo to your appointment, because “cinnamon brown” can mean different things to different people. Your current hair color and any previous color work will affect the result.

Honey Gold Balayage

If you’d like lighter pieces but don’t want one all-over color, ask about honey-toned balayage. The color is painted through selected sections, often along the mid-lengths and ends, so your natural base can still show through. Balayage placement can be tailored to how much lightness you want.

Think about how much upkeep you’re comfortable with, too. A softer blend near the roots can grow out more gradually than color placed close to the scalp. Wella’s balayage guide explains how placement affects maintenance.

Copper Premium

Copper can be a small accent or a much bolder change. If you’re curious but not ready to commit to an all-over shade, ask whether copper pieces through the lengths might suit you.

One thing to know: red and copper shades can lose their brightness faster, so ask your colorist what upkeep would look like before you decide. Wella’s copper color guide covers color care and fading.

Before You Book

Think about what you’ll be wearing, where you’re going and how long you’ll be out. If you’ll be moving between events, or spending time outdoors, you may prefer a style that’s partly pinned back. Chennai’s humidity can affect how hair holds, so let your stylist know where you’ll be and how long you need the style to last.

Your hair matters just as much as the outfit. Bring a photo of the look you like, and tell your stylist what you usually find difficult—whether that’s keeping curls in place, managing frizz or getting enough volume. They can suggest a version that works with your hair.

You don’t have to follow a trend to look festive. Pick a style that feels like you, and that you’ll be happy wearing all evening.
